What is Oz Lotto?

Oz Lotto is a national lottery game operated by Tatts Group Ltd in Australia. It was launched in 1994 and has since become one of the most popular lotteries in the country. The game offers players a chance to win massive prizes by matching numbers on a six-ball draw.

How Oz Lotto Works

Oz Lotto uses a standard lottery format, where players choose six numbers from a pool of 1 to 45. To play, participants purchase an entry ticket and submit their chosen numbers for the next available draw. Prize Divisions

The Oz Lotto offers eight possible prize divisions:

  1. Division 1: Match six winning numbers to win the jackpot.
  2. Division 2: Match five winning numbers plus the Powerball (a supplementary number drawn separately).
  3. Division 3: Match five winning numbers only (without the Powerball).
  4. Division 4: Match four winning numbers plus at least one of the Powerballs (four of which are drawn to complement each of the six main balls).
  5. Division 5: Match three or more main numbers but no Powerballs.
  6. Division 7: Match two or more main numbers, but no Powerballs.

Odds and Prizes

The odds of winning any prize in Oz Lotto vary depending on how many players participate. According to the official website, each ticket has a unique number associated with it, which can be checked using an online tool. The odds of matching six balls are approximately 1:46 million (using data from the first draw). In contrast, the odds for smaller prizes like Division 4 or 5 range from around 1 to 3 million.

Rules and Regulations

Key rules govern Oz Lotto participation:

  • Players must be at least 18 years old.
  • Each entry costs AUD $1.50 (Australian Dollars).
  • The minimum prize payout is AUD 2,000,000.
  • Winners have a one-year claim period; unclaimed prizes will be redistributed to the next draw.

Powerball and Power Up

A supplementary feature called “Powerball” was introduced in May 2013 as part of Oz Lotto. Each main ball has an equivalent power-up number drawn from a pool (0-9). The Powerball offers additional winning possibilities for each set of matching numbers but does not increase the jackpot value. Participating players pay an extra AUD $1 on top of their regular ticket price.

Variations and Special Draws

Tatts Group occasionally runs special draws with higher minimum jackpots or increased odds, such as New Year’s Day draws in 2008-2019. One example is when the New South Wales (NSW) lottery operators held an AUD $10 million draw on Australia Day in January 2022.

Types of Tickets

There are two types of entries available for Oz Lotto:

  1. Regular ticket: Each regular entry costs AUD $3, including a Powerball draw.
  2. System Bets: A system bet allows players to play multiple combinations from their selected numbers at a fixed price (AUD $7 or more), with some benefits and limitations.

Legal Context

Oz Lotto operates under various Australian state-based legislation governing lotteries and gaming. Tatts Group is subject to regulation by the responsible authorities in each territory where it offers services, such as the NSW Office of Liquor Gaming & Racing for New South Wales lottery operations.
