Hypnosis Before Surgery: Preparing Your Mind for a More Comfortable Recovery

By Lewis Heller, MD, MBA, CHT — Medical Hypnosis Institute

Having surgery can be stressful. Even when you have complete confidence in your surgeon, it is natural to worry about anesthesia, pain, nausea, and how quickly you will recover.

But what if you could prepare your mind for surgery just as you prepare your body?

Medical hypnosis before surgery can help reduce anxiety, encourage relaxation, and prepare patients for a more comfortable surgical experience. Research also suggests that hypnosis may help reduce pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting.

How Can Hypnosis Help Before Surgery?

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention in which the mind may become more receptive to positive suggestions and helpful mental imagery.

Rather than focusing on everything that might go wrong, hypnosis encourages patients to concentrate on positive expectations and their ability to manage the surgical experience.

Hypnosis may help patients:

  • Reduce anxiety: Approach surgery feeling calmer and more confident.
  • Manage discomfort: Develop techniques for responding more comfortably to pain.
  • Reduce nausea: Support relaxation and, when used around the time of surgery, potentially reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting.
  • Prepare for recovery: Mentally rehearse rest, healing, and a gradual return to normal activities.
  • Feel more in control: Replace unnecessary fear with greater confidence and a positive outlook.

Preparing the Mind Before, During, and After Surgery

In my medical hypnosis practice, I have developed an approach that addresses three stages of surgery.

Before surgery: Hypnosis helps reduce anxiety, build confidence, and prepare patients mentally for the experience.

During surgery: When permitted by the surgical and anesthesia teams, prerecorded hypnotic suggestions may be used to reinforce comfort and relaxation.

After surgery: Personalized suggestions focus on managing discomfort, encouraging restful sleep, and supporting a positive approach to recovery.

I often provide individualized recordings so patients can reinforce these suggestions at home.

Real-Life Examples: Preparing for Surgery with Medical Hypnosis

Over the years, I have worked with patients preparing for different types of surgery. Several experiences have been particularly memorable.

Hip surgery

A gentleman in his seventies was preparing for hip surgery. He wanted to reduce his anxiety and discomfort and hoped for a smooth recovery.

We developed a personalized hypnosis program addressing his preparation before surgery, suggestions for the procedure itself, and postoperative recovery.

One suggestion involved imagining blood flow being gently turned down, much like a faucet, during the operation and returning to normal afterward. Other suggestions focused on comfort, healing, and a smooth return to everyday activities.

Following surgery, the patient experienced a comfortable and uncomplicated recovery. His surgeon reportedly commented that he had rarely encountered such a dry operative field during this type of procedure.

Surgery around the eye

Another patient underwent surgery around the eye. Following the procedure, the patient experienced no noticeable bruising. The plastic surgeon reportedly commented that this was an unusually favorable outcome.

Shoulder surgery

A third patient underwent shoulder surgery and reported regaining full shoulder function within approximately two weeks, considerably sooner than had been anticipated.

These outcomes were encouraging. Although we cannot determine how much hypnosis contributed to each result, they demonstrate the positive surgical experiences I have observed in my practice.

One lesson I have learned over the years is that preparing patients with hypnosis before surgery appears, in my clinical experience, more beneficial than beginning the process only afterward.

What Does Scientific Research Tell Us?

Research provides encouraging support for the use of hypnosis during surgical preparation and medical procedures.

A major scientific review published online in 2025 examined 142 studies involving more than 9,000 patients. Researchers found that hypnosis used before procedures reduced anxiety and subsequent pain. Hypnosis used during procedures was also associated with reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Another 2025 review of 20 randomized clinical trials found that hypnosis significantly reduced anxiety and pain during invasive medical procedures.

These findings support hypnosis as a useful complement to conventional medical care, particularly for managing anxiety and discomfort.

Research continues to explore its effects on other surgical outcomes.

A Personalized Approach to Medical Hypnosis

At the Medical Hypnosis Institute, I combine my background as a physician with approximately 30 years of experience in clinical hypnosis.

I understand that surgery is more than a physical procedure. Concerns about anesthesia, discomfort, complications, and recovery can create considerable emotional stress.

My approach begins by understanding each patient’s concerns and developing personalized hypnotic suggestions tailored to the planned procedure.

Whether someone is preparing for orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, or another medical procedure, the goal is to help them approach the experience feeling calmer, more confident, and better prepared.

For individuals seeking pre-surgery hypnosis in Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Paradise Valley, Arizona, medical hypnosis may offer valuable additional support.

Taking the Next Step

Preparing for surgery involves more than following instructions about medications, eating, and drinking. Mental preparation can also be valuable.

Medical hypnosis provides an opportunity to approach surgery with greater confidence, less anxiety, and a more positive outlook toward recovery.

Disclaimer: Medical hypnosis can be an effective complementary approach for some patients undergoing surgery. Individual responses vary, and specific improvements in pain, nausea, bleeding, healing, or recovery time cannot be guaranteed. Hypnosis does not replace appropriate surgical, anesthesia, or postoperative medical care. Any use of recordings during a procedure requires approval from the surgical and anesthesia teams. Clinical examples describe individual experiences and do not establish that hypnosis caused the outcomes.
